Job Description

To build new tools, update existing tools and automate existing processes where possible

A product developer for Sustainable Ships is someone who is equipped with the skills to build tools, and ready to use these skills to make the world a better place. Tools are defined as anything that helps a user to do something. In other words, our tools help our clients to determine the right information, typically a business case, for maritime sustainability related matters. Tools can be an Excel sheet, a PDF or blog, a Webtool, a YouTube video or an API. Independent of how they look, they all do the same: save time and provide the user with the right information. As product developer, it is your job to transform company input and client requirements into the right tools, whilst also managing back-end processes for Sustainable Ships itself.

  • Location can be anywhere, Sustainable Ships is headquartered in Netherlands, Rotterdam

  • Employment type is full-time ( ~ 40 hrs per week) on a contracting basis, between 6-12 months period minimum

  • Reports to the heads of Science and Hacking Department - Science is leading

Key Responsibilities

  • Build new tools based on company input, for example when new maritime regulations or decarbonization technologies come online

  • Update existing tools based on client requirements, for example when a user provides feedback on a tool that needs to be improved

  • Automate existing processes in Excel, Calculator Studio, Notion, Squarespace, or any other software that Sustainable Ships uses to make tools

  • Collaborate with internal teams (70%) and external stakeholders or clients (30%) to ensure their feedback is reflected in the tools

  • Conduct testing, troubleshooting and communicating with other software developers to improve product performance

  • Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, best practices and software suites that Sustainable Ships uses (Notion, Calculator Studio, Grid)

  • Document and update product specifications, build manuals, tutorials and other means to ensure users can operate tools

Key Skills

  • Excel is an absolute necessity

  • Engineering; maritime, aeronautical or mechanical engineering is preferred
