Inside a Battery Container

A sneak peak into the Corvus BOB, a type-approved, containerized, all-in-one battery room solution

The Corvus BOB (Battery On Board) is a standardized, class-approved, modular battery room solution available in 10-foot and 20-foot ISO high-cube container sizes. The complete energy storage system (ESS) comes with battery, battery monitoring system (BMS), HVAC , TR exhaust, and firefighting and detection system. The “plug and play battery room” simplifies integration into any system integrator’s power management system on board a ship. The battery cells have passive thermal runaway protection, and are type-approved according to the most stringent rules and regulations.

  • Max capacity of a 20ft BOB is 1,492 kWh.

  • Max power is approximately 1,492 kW, pending on board integration of BOB.

  • Can be used for peakshaving, spinning reserve, full electric sailing and more.

  • Lead time of a BOB is 4 months at time of writing.

It should be noted that Sustainable Ships does not receive any revenue for promoting BOB - we simply think BOB is awesome.

Safe, cost-efficient and flexible

The containerized solution provides a safe, compact, and space-efficient solution for housing batteries on board a ship, either on the deck or below deck. Multiple containers can be combined to create larger energy storage capacities, providing scalability based on the ship’s energy requirements. It also integrates with all power management systems, but integration is outside the scope of Corvus generally. It does allow for extra flexibility, making it easier to adapt the system to different ship sizes and power demands.

The standard shipping container dimensions make transport less complex and more predictable, as it provides easy storing, stacking and installation. Off-hire and installation time can be significantly reduced as the battery room is fully tested before it arrives at the shipyard.

Industry-leading marine battery system

The first Corvus BOB system will incorporate the Corvus Orca ESS, the world’s leading battery system suitable for a wide range of vessels including offshore vessels, cruise and ferries, merchant vessels, workboats and fishing vessels. Going forward, Corvus will expand the container range to include other products from the company`s battery portfolio. Orca Energy is built with Single-Cell Passive Thermal Runaway protection, and type-approved according to the most stringent rules and regulations by DNV.

Ship integrators, yards and owners want to minimize interfaces and potential complications onboard. With a pre-approved battery room solution you ease the classification process, you have limited interfaces and all surrounding structures and systems can be prepared prior to delivery” He continues, “We believe containerized solutions will be an important part of the ongoing transition towards cleaner and more sustainable maritime transportation due to scalability and also due to the ability for new business models like “power-by-the-hour” and leasing options.
