Port of Hamburg

Carbon neutral by 2040 - 72 MVA installed shore power capacity by 2024

The Hamburg Port Authority has set itself the target of reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2025 and cutting them by 100 per cent by 2040, i.e. becoming climate-neutral. Up to date, it has been identified by Sustainable Ships as the most ‘sustainable port’ in both ambitions and ongoing shore power projects.

Hamburg signed shore power declaration at the One Ocean Summit 2022, agreeing to make best efforts to deploy shore-side electricity supply by 2028.

Port of Hamburg adheres to the World Ports Sustainability Program and considers the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals as a single and indivisible orientation for the sustainable development of ports. The program implements the UN SDGs along six themes, each of them covering a non-exhaustive list of potential topics: Digitalization, Infrastructure, Health Safety and Security, Environmental care, Community building, Climate and Energy.

Shore Power

The Port of Hamburg has a great amount of experience in shore power, starting with the Altona project in 2016. The total amount of installed shore power by 2024 would be an amazing 72 MVA.
